Rachel Binah – 2016
I am continuing to explore the drama and subtleties of paper in these hand sewn constructions. This work celebrates music, in tribute to the Mendocino Music Festival taking place this month.
Music is ephemeral. Whether delicate or bold, sound is as insubstantial and temporary as cloud vapor. Even while being heard, it dissolves and disappears. My musical memories can only be a snapshot in time. These pieces are reminiscent of the feelings music evokes for me in a fragment, a phrase, the totality of a piece or genre.
They are sewn by hand, using the unlikely materials of many types of paper, plain, painted or otherwise embellished and incorporating unconventional materials such as window screening, Tyvek, fabric, discarded and found objects.

I'm currently exploring dimension with my collage paintings. They are influenced by the textural surfaces found on environmental forms. My work is created by folding, manipulating, gluing and sewing papers, combined with found and discarded materials, onto rods, panels or canvases. I use acrylic paints, pastels and a variety of mixed media. |
