Responses: Caitlin Hahn and Arianne Rand

In September 2004 Arianne Rand and Caitlin Hahn began a correspondence of paintings; sending them back and forth through the mail from Brooklyn, New York to San Fransisco, CA and then from Brooklyn to Oaxaca,Mexico. Although they do not work on the same painting, they provide a jumping off place for one another.

The completed piece that arrives in the mail propells the beginning of a new piece, and so on. The only guideline we set for ourselves is the paper size (11x15 in) , but obvious similarities in the ways we both strive to integrate found objects, painting, and drawing in our non-objective studies lead us to feel that an interesting dialogue and learning process would naturally flow from our correspondence.

We started our project with a few desires: to see and share in one another's work in a tangible way since we live far from one another, and also to add a new
element to respond to in each of our studios. We have known each other for twenty twenty years, but have not lived in the same geographic place for over ten years. Like conversations between old friends, this correspondence is something we hope to continue through the years, it being a powerful way that we can keep in contact, sharing and responding to the visual worlds explored
each time a new piece of art arrives in the studio.

Arianne is currently living in Oaxaca, Mexico and Caitlin is living in Brooklyn, New York. Mendocino is our shared home town.
