Art is something that is always with me. it feeds, strengthens and sustains my sense of well-being. It is an essential part of my life and part of who I am. I am compelled by the intensity of focus I experience when painting. It's fascination and mysterious that by making marks on paper a reality is created that never existed before. As I paint I become engaged in a dialogue with the piece. Questions come up, surprises happen, moods change, areas get obliterated, colors demand to be used. A momentum builds and there's a disappearance of time and of thoughts. I'm in the realm of the unknown, and yet it's safe because I can always change it. It's a state of being that calls forth work and play, discipline and freedom. As I paint, I create a relationship that is open-ended, that changes with time and work, that involves taking risks, that can be immensely frustrating and sublimely satisfying, that has a depth reached by perseverance. It is very gratifying when someone feeels an affinity with my art, when people are willing and interested in taking a journey into the work. My work is primarily abstract and intuitive with no outside frame of reference. I want to leave the door open for others to bring their visions, experiences, and interpretations to the work. |
