Palimpsest means something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. This work comes out of a desire to revise older works, most of which are very large, and break them down into smaller units. The individual pieces have become new works that are unique paintings.
The work is based on a very large encaustic painting from the late 1970s, a time that encaustic painting, an ancient painting technique, was having its revival. The underlying original media and color comes through in the new work in a subtle way. My current studio practice gives these paintings new life.
There is a Second Saturday Meet the Artist June 14, 5-7pm. Gallery hours are Thursday through Monday 11-5pm.
