Time Machines

A time machine moves through time—not through space. Thus, the apparatus, appliance, contraption, engine, instrument, mechanism, or vehicle, before travel is initiated, must be taken to the geographical location at which the operator wishes to find her or himself. For instance, if one wants to witness Love’s Labour Lost, the earliest recorded performance of which occurred at Christmas time in 1597 at Court before Queen Elizabeth, one would need to bring the mechanism to England. However, it would not be wise to place it actually in London. Streets would have altered, buildings would have tumbled down and been rebuilt, and new ones erected. There would be danger of arriving inside the walls of a more recently built structure. One would instead choose a rural site, and plan to make one’s way over the ground to the desired venue. Careful historical research would still be necessary. One would need to make sure that in the destination period the area was clear. Still, even in nearly empty pasture land, there is the disagreeable possibility that one would suddenly find oneself occupying the same space as an ancient oak or finding one’s substance mixed with the molecules of a cow. Time travel is not without its hazards.
