Inspired by the exuberant influences of indigenous embroidery, mud brick buildings, brightly painted shrines and carved marble temples of India, I have sought to channel some small sense of this place through my textiles.
The first thing I noticed when entering India is the riot of colors everywhere. Women dressed in brightly colored saris, temples painted in clashing neon, the bright white attire of a groom on a white horse, indigo textiles laid out to dry in the sun, the drab earthiness of the desert, the saffron and turmeric of curry in food.
Then there is the sacred geometry of the architecture carved into doorways, the arches and pillars of temples and palaces, the stacked marble block steps reaching deep into a water well. There are the glazed surfaces of tiles, the flat texture of mud brick, the sheen of silk textiles, the tiny glinting mirrors embroidered on clothing.
These are some of the details that have influenced my hand woven and felted wool fiber pieces.
